Krystal: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Krystal is a UK web hosting and cloud company offering shared and managed hosting, VPS, virtual machines, object and block storage and GPU instances. Its hosting pages target websites, applications and businesses that run content-management systems. The company promotes UK-based support and energy-efficient data centres.

Krystal Hosting Ltd is registered in England and Wales, with a registered office in London. The website describes UK-based hosting and support, and its hosting pages place services in a London data centre. The United Kingdom is outside the EU and the EEA. For a European organisation, the key questions are therefore where backups are kept, who can access the data through support, which sub-processors are used, and whether a data processing agreement applies. The website names no European hosting option, and the company's ownership is not stated on the pages reviewed.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Krystal

Krystal is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Krystal hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Krystal is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Krystal together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
