Mailspring: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Mailspring is an email client for Mac, Windows and Linux that supports multiple accounts. The app syncs directly over IMAP, CalDAV and CardDAV between your mail provider and your own computer, using a native C++ sync engine. The client offers a unified inbox, advanced search, undo send, signatures and translation. A Pro tier adds features such as read receipts, link tracking, send later and follow-up reminders. The client's source code is public under the GPL-3.0.

Mailspring is published by Foundry 376, LLC; its privacy policy refers to transfers of personal data to the United States. Mail and login credentials stay on your device (mail is not routed through Mailspring's servers), but a Mailspring ID and Pro features involve sending data such as the email addresses of linked accounts to the vendor's servers. The privacy policy does not mention the GDPR. Used without a Mailspring ID, the client keeps its data local, and the choice of mail provider then determines where the messages themselves are stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Mailspring

Mailspring is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Mailspring hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Mailspring is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Mailspring together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
