MailUp: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

MailUp is a marketing platform for email and SMS campaigns, with responsive designs in a drag-and-drop editor, an AI writing assistant, cross-channel automation workflows, segmentation and integrations with CRM, e-commerce, CMS and ERP systems. It also offers consultancy services. It is delivered as software as a service. The platform was formerly part of Growens, which agreed in 2023 to sell its email business to TeamSystem.

The website now names TeamSystem S.p.A. of Pesaro, Italy as the company behind it and as data controller. TeamSystem is reported to be majority owned by the US private-equity firm Hellman & Friedman, with Silver Lake and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority as other shareholders; a US controlling owner can create CLOUD Act exposure. The privacy policy does not specify server locations. MailUp's GDPR page states that the platform runs on Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services in the European Union, which should be confirmed with the vendor together with the data processing agreement and sub-processors.

Why digital sovereignty matters with MailUp

MailUp is headquartered in IT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so MailUp scores best on data residency.

MailUp is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs MailUp together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
