Microsoft Power BI is a business-intelligence platform for self-service and enterprise reporting. It connects to many data sources, lets users model data and build interactive reports and dashboards, and includes Copilot to generate reports and summaries from natural-language requests. Power BI Desktop is used to author reports and the cloud service to publish and share them. There are also mobile apps, Power BI Embedded for placing reports in custom applications, and Power BI Report Server for on-premises reporting. It is part of the Microsoft Power Platform.
Microsoft is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, in the United States, so US law such as the CLOUD Act can apply to data held by Microsoft. The Power BI service runs on Azure: a tenant has a home region chosen at creation, and with Multi-Geo, capacities can be deployed in other Azure regions so that compute and storage stay there. Some tenant metadata remains in the home region. Report Server lets an organisation keep reports on its own infrastructure. The software is proprietary.
