NetBSD is a free and open-source, UNIX-like operating system. The project describes it as a highly portable system that is available for a wide range of hardware platforms, from servers and desktops to handheld and embedded devices. It is developed by an international community of developers, port maintainers and a core group. NetBSD is aimed at technically skilled users and organisations that want to install and run a Unix-like system themselves on their own hardware.
The NetBSD Foundation, Inc. is a tax-exempt organisation incorporated in the United States under section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code, and it manages the project's legal and financial affairs. As a US legal entity, the foundation is subject to US law. The project's website describes no vendor-operated cloud service in which customer data is stored. For a European organisation, the main relevance is the open-source licence: the source code can be reviewed, modified and maintained by in-house staff or a European service provider, on infrastructure within the EU.
