Nextcloud Calendar: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Nextcloud Calendar is the calendar and scheduling app of the Nextcloud collaboration platform. Users create and edit events online, share calendars and synchronise appointments with phones, computers and other devices using the CalDAV standard. The app is installed as an extension on a Nextcloud server and distributed through the Nextcloud App Store. It is aimed at organisations that want their calendar data kept on their own infrastructure.

Nextcloud GmbH, the company behind the platform, is based in Germany and is therefore an EU company; the sources consulted name no foreign parent. The calendar app is open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence, and its code is publicly available on GitHub. Because the app runs on the organisation's own Nextcloud server, data stays where that server is operated. Organisations that do not want to run a server can use Nextcloud One, a managed service hosted in Germany by a partner. For a European organisation, the combination of an EU headquarters, open-source code and self-hosting is the main sovereignty advantage. The operator remains responsible for the server, backups and access control.
