OKD is the community distribution of Kubernetes, developed by the OKD contributors together with Red Hat. It bundles Kubernetes with a web console, authentication, monitoring, an image registry and an operator catalogue. It is intended for cloud, on-premises and edge environments and is installed by the organisation itself. OKD 5.0, based on Kubernetes 1.36, was released in September 2026. The platform is technically closely related to Red Hat OpenShift.
Red Hat, the main sponsor, is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, and has been part of IBM since 2019. The source code is licensed under Apache 2.0, so a European organisation can run, inspect and modify the platform on European infrastructure. Organisations that need commercial support turn to OpenShift, a separate paid product from the same company, which is outside this community project.
