Microsoft OneNote is a digital notebook for free-form information gathering and collaboration. Content is organised in notebooks, sections and pages, and several people can edit a shared notebook at the same time. OneNote is available for Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android and ChromeOS, and as a web version. It is free to use and is also included in Microsoft 365 and Office. Notebooks are typically stored on OneDrive or SharePoint; local notebooks are supported only by the desktop version.
Microsoft is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, and listed on Nasdaq. OneNote is therefore a US, proprietary service, which is relevant for the CLOUD Act even when data is stored in Europe. For enterprise Microsoft 365 customers whose sign-up location is in the EU or EFTA, Microsoft applies the EU Data Boundary: customer data is stored and processed in data centres in the EU or EFTA, with limited exceptions documented by Microsoft in which data may be transferred outside it. Customers who purchase Multi-Geo are not covered by the EU Data Boundary.
