Open vSwitch is a multilayer virtual switch that can run as a soft switch inside a hypervisor or as the control stack for switching hardware. It is designed for large-scale network automation through programmatic extension and supports standard protocols such as NetFlow, sFlow, IPFIX, RSPAN, LACP and 802.1ag. Open vSwitch can be distributed across several physical servers and integrates with virtualisation and cloud platforms such as Xen, KVM and OpenStack. It runs on Linux, FreeBSD and NetBSD and has been ported to DPDK. The related OVN project adds virtual network abstractions such as overlays and security groups.
Open vSwitch is open source under the Apache 2.0 licence (a few files carry other terms). It is a Linux Foundation Collaborative Project, and the Linux Foundation, a US non-profit organisation, owns the trademarks. There is no vendor-hosted service: you run the software on your own infrastructure, so no data flows to the project, and you can inspect the source code.
