OpenSVC: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

OpenSVC is open-source software for cluster management and high availability on Linux servers. Its agent supervises, restarts and relocates applications between nodes and can orchestrate containers and other resources such as disks, filesystems and IP addresses. According to its makers, the current version targets small to mid-sized clusters of 1 to 32 nodes and runs on physical servers, virtual machines and cloud instances. An optional collector aggregates agent data for inventory, auditing and automation. It is operated through the command line, a terminal interface and an API.

OpenSVC is both the product name and the name of the French company behind it, based in Gouvieux and founded in 2009. The agent has been licensed under Apache 2.0 since version 3. You run the software yourself, so configuration and data stay in your own environment; the company also sells support. The documentation consulted does not mention a cloud service of its own.

Why digital sovereignty matters with OpenSVC

OpenSVC is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so OpenSVC scores best on data residency.

OpenSVC is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs OpenSVC together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
