Paperpal is an AI writing workspace for academic work, used by researchers, students, universities and publishers. Users can upload references and PDFs and ask questions of them, draft text with citations in many styles, and check manuscripts for plagiarism, AI-generated text and reference errors. Paraphrasing, grammar checks, translation and a chat-with-PDF function are also offered. It is delivered as a web service and as add-ins for Word, Google Docs, Chrome and Overleaf.
Paperpal is operated by Cactus Communications Services Pte Ltd, and the website footer shows a Singapore office address. The privacy policy of the wider Cactus group states that personal information is hosted and backed up by a third-party cloud provider in Singapore, India, the United States or Japan, encrypted at rest and in transit. Where Cactus processes data for customers, the policy refers to a controller and processor binding agreement, and the site says uploaded work is not used to train AI. None of these locations is in the EU, so a European institution should check its contractual safeguards.
