Redash: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Redash is an open-source tool for teams that work with SQL. In a browser-based query editor with a schema browser and auto-complete, users query more than 35 SQL and NoSQL data sources, turn results into charts and dashboards, share them, schedule refreshes and set alerts. A REST API covers everything available in the interface. The code is published under the BSD-2-Clause licence and can be run on your own infrastructure; Docker files and ready-made cloud images are provided.

Databricks, a US company, acquired Redash in June 2020. The hosted service at app.redash.io closed on 30 November 2021, and customers were pointed to Databricks SQL or to self-hosting the open-source version. Using Redash therefore now means operating it yourself, so you decide where data is processed, for instance in an EU data centre, and no data passes through a vendor-run service. The project remains under US ownership, which matters mainly for the future direction of the code.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Redash

Redash is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Redash scores best on data residency.

Redash is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Redash together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
