Skylar Compliance: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Skylar Compliance, formerly Restorepoint, is a ScienceLogic product for network configuration and change management. It makes centralised backups of configurations for network and security devices from more than one hundred vendors, with scheduled and on-demand backups and one-click recovery. It also monitors and notifies about changes and keeps change histories, and offers a compliance dashboard, reports, an audit trail and policies that are tested automatically and can trigger remediation. The product is delivered as a virtual appliance for VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V or Amazon AWS.

ScienceLogic, headquartered in Reston, Virginia (US), acquired Restorepoint in 2021, so the product has a US owner, a CLOUD Act signal for European organisations. Because it is deployed as a virtual appliance, you choose the environment it runs in, and the documentation is available even in air-gapped networks. Where your configuration backups are stored is therefore in your own hands, depending on the platform you select.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Skylar Compliance

Skylar Compliance is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Skylar Compliance runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Skylar Compliance is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Skylar Compliance together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
