Rocky Linux is an open-source Linux distribution for business use. It was founded in December 2020 by the original founder of CentOS, after Red Hat moved CentOS development towards CentOS Stream. Its stated aim is to achieve CentOS's original goals. The operating system is installed on an organisation's own servers or in its own cloud environment. The project states that it is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Red Hat.
The project is hosted by the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation (RESF), which holds the Rocky Linux trademark registered in the US. According to a press report, the RESF was set up as a Delaware public benefit corporation, so its seat is in the US. The components developed by the project are licensed under BSD 3-Clause, while individual packages follow their own open-source licences. Because there is no vendor cloud and the system runs on your own infrastructure, you decide where data is kept. European organisations should still review their update sources, support arrangements and package licences.
