Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement, formerly ExactTarget, is Salesforce's marketing platform for consumer communication. According to the documentation it includes Audience Builder, Automation Studio, Content Builder, Email Studio, Journey Builder, Mobile Studio and Web Studio. Brands use it to automate email, SMS and other messages and to orchestrate them in journeys. It is delivered as software as a service; Salesforce now positions it alongside Marketing Cloud Next, which is built natively on the Salesforce platform.
Salesforce, Inc. is headquartered in San Francisco, United States, so US legislation such as the CLOUD Act can apply. According to the infrastructure and sub-processors document, customer data is hosted on Salesforce and Google infrastructure in the US, France, Germany and Belgium; Hyperforce customers run on AWS, including in the US, India, Australia and Japan. Customers who purchased before 28 November 2019 have their data stored in the US, and after a disaster in an EMEA facility data is restored to the US. A European organisation should therefore have the chosen region and the recovery arrangements confirmed contractually. The software is proprietary.
