SimpleLogin: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

SimpleLogin is an email alias service that protects the user's real address. Mail sent to an alias is forwarded straight to the user's own mailbox, and replies go out through the alias so the personal address stays hidden. Users can connect their own domain, use browser extensions and install the Android and iOS apps. PGP encryption before forwarding and two-factor authentication with TOTP and WebAuthn are supported.

SimpleLogin is operated by Proton AG, which is domiciled in Geneva, Switzerland, and the service is governed by Swiss law. The service runs on servers from Proton and from UpCloud, a Finnish cloud provider. Its components are open source, and the vendor describes a self-hosting option, so a European organisation can run the service on its own infrastructure. Proton also names an EU representative in Luxembourg for its services.

Why digital sovereignty matters with SimpleLogin

SimpleLogin is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so SimpleLogin scores best on data residency.

SimpleLogin is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs SimpleLogin together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
