SMART Notebook is desktop software that teachers use to create and present lessons on SMART Board interactive displays. It detects touch, gestures, pens and erasers automatically, imports PDF and PowerPoint files, and works with the SMART Document Camera. It runs on Windows and macOS, and according to the privacy policy the basic version can be used without an internet connection and without signing in. Notebook Plus adds web-based features such as game-based activities and formative assessment.
SMART Technologies ULC is headquartered in Calgary, Canada, and is wholly owned by Taiwan's Foxconn. According to its privacy policy, optional cloud content can be stored with Amazon Web Services in the United States and Germany, and Firebase processing runs in US or European data centres. SMART states that it supports the GDPR and refers to a data processing agreement. Because the core software runs locally, data exposure is limited to the optional cloud features; European schools should check in advance which storage region applies to them.
