Spreo: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Spreo, formerly Metro Retro, is an online whiteboard for agile and engineering teams, used for retrospectives, sprint planning, brainstorming and workshops. It offers sticky notes, private writing, voting, zones, connectors, actions with owners and due dates, anonymous polls and timers, plus over a hundred templates and a Jira integration. It is a SaaS service that runs in the browser.

The provider is Deqo Software Ltd, which describes itself as a software company based in the United Kingdom. The UK is outside the EU, but no owner in another country is named. According to its security page, Spreo runs on Digital Ocean in Amsterdam and all data is hosted within the EU. Digital Ocean is itself a US company, which some organisations may want to take into account. A data processing agreement is available and the company states it operates in accordance with the GDPR. Intercom (US) is optionally used for support and can be disabled on request. European organisations can review the sub-processor list to assess the supply chain.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Spreo

Spreo is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Spreo scores best on data residency.

Spreo is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Spreo together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
