StartMail is a paid, privacy-focused email service founded by Robert Beens and David Bodnick, the creators of the Startpage search engine. The service runs without advertising, tracking or profiling and offers unlimited disposable aliases that you can create and delete at any time. You can encrypt messages with PGP in one click, or send password-protected encrypted email so that recipients without encryption can still read and reply. Email and contacts can be migrated from other providers. You use StartMail in a browser, including as a shortcut on a phone's home screen, or with clients such as Thunderbird, Outlook and Apple Mail. Plans are available for personal and business use.
StartMail is based in the Netherlands and, according to the company, its servers are located there too, so Dutch law and the GDPR apply. StartMail does not name an open-source licence for the service. For a European organisation, this means an EU-based provider with hosting inside the EU.
