Stud.IP: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Stud.IP is an open-source learning and campus management system. It is described as the operating system for education and is intended for universities, public authorities, associations and companies. Its functions are grouped into teaching, learning, administration and interfaces; examples are teaching workload management, room management and an Opencast plugin for video. For each course, tools such as schedules, file folders, forums, news, wikis, polls and tests are available. Institutions usually run Stud.IP themselves as their own installation.

Stud.IP originated at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen together with the company Data-Quest. Development is coordinated by the association Stud.IP e.V. in Göttingen and takes place at several German institutions. The software is freely available; according to the University of Göttingen there is no fee for using it. There is no foreign parent company, and an organisation can run the software on its own servers in the EU, keeping data under its own control. Anyone who prefers not to operate it themselves should check the hosting location and company jurisdiction of the service provider.
