Sylva is an open-source cloud software framework for telco and edge networks. According to the project's website, it provides a framework for telco and edge cloud needs, with a planned reference implementation and validation programme. It was initiated by major European carriers together with network function providers and builds on existing open-source projects. It is intended for telecom operators and their vendors, who install and operate it on their own infrastructure. It is a framework, not a hosted service.
Sylva was launched in 2022 as the first project hosted by Linux Foundation Europe, a non-profit whose main office is in Brussels, Belgium. The code is licensed under Apache 2.0 and developed in the project's GitLab group. Because a foundation rather than a company governs the project, no single company holds a controlling stake, and there is no foreign parent company. For a European organisation, the open licence and EU-based foundation are relevant, but operators still need to review the upstream components the framework builds on and run the platform in their own data centres.
