Sync-in: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Sync-in is a self-hostable platform for file storage, synchronisation and collaboration. It is aimed at teams and organisations that want their own workspace for files, with spaces, guests, groups and fine-grained permissions. Features include protected public links with expiry dates and passwords, WebDAV, full-text search, an activity log, comments, file locking and joint document editing with Collabora Online, OnlyOffice or Euro-Office. Sign-in can use local accounts, OIDC or LDAP, with multi-factor authentication. Desktop clients exist for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus a command-line client. Files remain readable on the server's file system.

Sync-in is a French company and an open-source project under the AGPL-3.0-or-later licence, with its source code on GitHub. The company offers support, partnerships and professional services. You install the software with Docker or npm on your own infrastructure, so your data and access rules stay under your control.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Sync-in

Sync-in is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Sync-in scores best on data residency.

Sync-in is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Sync-in together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
