Tailscale: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Tailscale is an identity-based connectivity platform built on the open-source WireGuard protocol. Devices form a peer-to-peer mesh network, a tailnet, in which traffic flows directly between devices and passes through firewalls and NAT without port forwarding. It can also be used like a traditional VPN through an exit node. A coordination server exchanges public keys and distributes access policies; DERP relays forward encrypted traffic when a direct connection is not possible. Authentication runs through an external identity provider. The service is delivered as SaaS.

Tailscale Inc. is a privately held company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, backed by venture capital. According to its privacy policy, data is processed in Canada, Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom. The clients are open source under a BSD licence; the management service is not. For a European organisation, keys and access policy remain dependent on the vendor's coordination server, while the traffic itself is end-to-end encrypted.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Tailscale

Tailscale is headquartered in CA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Tailscale hosts data in OTHER, EU, US. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Tailscale is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Tailscale together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
