Tet: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Tet is a Latvian telecommunications and cloud company based in Riga, formerly known as Lattelecom until its rebranding in 2019. Its business offer includes Tet Cloud, virtual server rental, data backup, S3-compatible storage, containerisation, data centre solutions and private clouds that run inside a client's own environment. The services are delivered as managed cloud and hosting services for companies in Latvia and the Baltic region.

According to the Latvian public broadcaster LSM, the Latvian state holds a majority stake in Tet and the Swedish Telia group holds the minority stake through a subsidiary. The state majority means the ownership chain does not lead to a state outside the EU. Tet Cloud runs from geographically separate sites in Riga and Copenhagen, and the company says some clients keep copies of critical data outside Latvia. For a European organisation, the Latvian seat and the EU locations are the relevant facts, while a planned buy-out of Telia's stake deserves attention.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Tet

Tet is headquartered in LV and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Tet scores best on data residency.

Tet is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Tet together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
