Thunderbird is an open-source email client for Windows, macOS and Linux that combines messages, calendars and contacts in one app. It is installed locally on the user's computer. A Thunderbird Mobile version for Android is available through Google Play and F-Droid. The application belongs to the Mozilla family and is developed by MZLA Technologies.
MZLA Technologies Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation and operates from the United States. Because the client runs on the user's own device, the mailbox provider chosen by the user, not the software vendor, decides where mail is stored. The source code is public, so a European organisation can inspect the software and deploy it under its own control. The US corporate structure matters mainly for services the publisher itself provides.
