TransIP: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

TransIP is a Dutch provider of virtual servers (VPS) and cloud infrastructure. Its VPS packages offer shared or dedicated vCPUs, distributed NVMe network storage with three replicas, root access, a firewall, monitoring and a REST API. HA-IP, a load balancer, private networking, backups and block storage are also available. You can choose from a range of Linux distributions and Windows Server. The services are delivered as a hosted cloud service.

TransIP is based in Leiden and is part of team.blue, a European digital services group headquartered in Ghent, Belgium. The investor Hg has been involved in team.blue since 2019; it is an investment firm with offices that include London, and Sofina and CPP Investments took stakes in 2024. The VPS services run from two availability zones in the Netherlands, Amsterdam and Alblasserdam. Your data therefore stays in the EU, although the ownership structure also includes an investor outside the EU. The services are not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with TransIP

TransIP is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in GB. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so TransIP scores best on data residency.

TransIP is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs TransIP together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
