Tuta: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Tuta (formerly Tutanota) is an email service with calendar and contacts for individuals and businesses. Data is end-to-end encrypted; since 2024 Tuta uses TutaCrypt, which combines X25519 with the post-quantum algorithm Kyber-1024. Subject lines and attachments are encrypted, while sender and recipient addresses and timestamps are not. Tuta supports custom domains with aliases and offers apps for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux, plus a web version. A free tier and paid plans exist, including business plans.

Tuta is run by Tutao GmbH, founded in 2011 in Hanover, Germany. The company says it stores all data on its own servers in ISO 27001-certified data centres in Germany, under German and European data protection law, and it offers a GDPR-compliant data processing agreement. The web client, desktop clients and mobile apps are open source and published on GitHub, so third parties can audit the code. The service is delivered as a hosted service operated by the vendor.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Tuta

Tuta is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Tuta scores best on data residency.

Tuta is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Tuta together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
