UBports is a global non-profit that develops Ubuntu Touch, an open-source operating system for mobile devices. Ubuntu Touch grew out of Canonical's Ubuntu Phone project and combines desktop functionality with touchscreen use. Its user interface, Lomiri, adapts to any screen size. Halium, a hardware adaptation layer, lets Ubuntu Touch run on devices that use Android. The operating system is installed on supported devices with the UBports Installer; devices mentioned include the PinePhone and the Volla Phone. The source code is available mainly under the GPL and other open-source licences.
UBports took over Ubuntu Touch after Canonical ended its support in April 2017. The source code resides with the UBports Foundation, a charitable foundation under German law. For European organisations it is relevant that development is not in the hands of a commercial company and that the system runs locally on the device, without a mandatory cloud service from the supplier. Anyone can inspect the code and contribute.
