Valkey: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Valkey is an open-source, in-memory key-value data store used for caching, message queues and as a primary database. It supports data types such as strings, hashes, lists, sets and sorted sets, runs standalone or as a cluster with replication and high availability, and offers Lua scripting and modules. Official clients exist for languages such as Python, Java, Go and Node.js. It was forked from Redis in 2024, after Redis changed its licence, and is distributed as source code, Docker images and prebuilt binaries.

Valkey is BSD-licensed and run as a community project under the Linux Foundation (US), with contributors from several companies. No single vendor holds your data: it resides where you operate Valkey. A European organisation can run it on its own infrastructure or with a European hosting provider. Cloud providers such as AWS and Google Cloud also offer managed Valkey, which falls under the provider's jurisdiction.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Valkey

Valkey is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Valkey scores best on data residency.

Valkey is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Valkey together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
