VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) is a private cloud platform that combines server virtualisation (vSphere), software-defined storage (vSAN) and software-defined networking and security (NSX) with management and automation. Organisations use it to run their own data centres, edge sites and service-provider infrastructure under one operating model, with self-service provisioning for virtual machines, containers and other workloads. According to Broadcom, version 9.0 became generally available in June 2025, and the company aims to present the components as one cohesive product. The software is installed by the customer or a service provider on its own infrastructure.
VCF is owned by Broadcom Inc., headquartered in Palo Alto (US), which completed its acquisition of VMware on 22 November 2023. Because the software runs on your own or a chosen European infrastructure, you decide where the data is stored. The vendor remains a US company, however: licences, updates and support run through Broadcom and fall under US jurisdiction. Bundling everything into one suite also increases dependence on a single vendor compared with separate components.
