VNET Cloud: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

VNET is a Slovak telecom provider based in Bratislava with its own optical network. Its offering covers business internet, voice services over VoIP, cloud, cybersecurity and managed IT services. On the cloud side, VNET offers CloudPRO, an IaaS service ranging from standalone virtual machines to a complete virtual data center, built on the OpenStack platform. It also provides Smart storage, POHODA in the Cloud (a hosted version of Slovak accounting software), server housing and colocation in three data centers.

VNET was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Bratislava, Slovakia. The company's three data centers are all in Bratislava. CloudPRO runs from two independent, fully separate cloud platforms in the Digitalis and SHC III data centers. Your data therefore remains in Slovakia, within the EU. The services are delivered as hosted services and are not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with VNET Cloud

VNET Cloud is headquartered in SK and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so VNET Cloud scores best on data residency.

VNET Cloud is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs VNET Cloud together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
