WasmEdge is an open-source WebAssembly runtime for cloud-native, edge and serverless applications. Developers write functions in languages such as C, Rust, Go, JavaScript or Python and run them in a sandboxed environment, or embed the runtime in an existing application. According to the project, the runtime starts faster and takes up less space than comparable Linux container applications. WasmEdge is installed on the servers that run the workloads.
WasmEdge is hosted by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), part of the US-based Linux Foundation, and was accepted as a CNCF project in 2021. The code is available under the Apache 2.0 licence, so a European organisation can inspect, modify and operate the runtime without depending on a proprietary vendor. The sovereignty question lies mainly in governance: the project sits within a US-based foundation, which matters when the runtime becomes part of a critical platform.
