WeTransfer is a service for sending large files and sharing them by link. The sender uploads files through the website and the recipient receives a download link. It is a hosted cloud application, so nothing is installed on the user's own infrastructure. The platform is developed by WeTransfer B.V., a Dutch company based in Amsterdam.
WeTransfer B.V. has its seat in Amsterdam, but the service belongs to Bending Spoons S.p.A., an Italian technology company based in Milan that acquired WeTransfer in July 2024. Ownership therefore sits within the EU, and the main sovereignty question concerns where files are stored and which sub-processors handle them. Storage locations and sub-processors should be checked in the vendor's current data processing terms before sensitive files are shared through the service.
