Yaook is open-source software for deploying and operating OpenStack on Kubernetes. Its operators automate routine tasks such as replacing failed nodes, upgrading OpenStack versions and moving workloads, and are configured with manifests that describe the OpenStack services to run. It is delivered for self-hosting: the operators are deployed into the operator's own Kubernetes cluster, ideally on bare metal, and are typically managed through GitOps. The project's website describes the software as fully open source.
Yaook is developed and maintained by ALASCA e.V., a registered non-profit association under German law with its registered seat in Dresden, Germany. The vendor's contact address is c/o Cloud&Heat Technologies GmbH in Dresden. The code is licensed under Apache 2.0 and hosted on GitLab. Because the software runs on infrastructure the operator controls, cloud data stays under the operator's own administration, and the project has no foreign parent company. For a European organisation building a private or sovereign OpenStack cloud, the decisive questions are hardware, operations and staffing, which remain with the operator.
