Zorin OS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Zorin OS is a Linux distribution built on Ubuntu and designed as an alternative to Windows and macOS for people who want a familiar, simple desktop. The Zorin Appearance app lets users change the desktop layout to resemble Windows, macOS or Linux, and many Windows applications can be started from their .exe or .msi installers. The Core edition is free to download; Pro is a paid edition with additional apps and support. For organisations, the vendor offers Zorin Grid to manage Zorin OS computers. The system is installed locally on the device.

Zorin OS is developed by Zorin Group, whose operating company, Zorin Technology Group Limited, is registered in Dublin, Ireland; no non-EU parent company appears. The vendor states that the system is open source. Its privacy policy names DigitalOcean and Netlify for web hosting and notes that personal data may be processed outside the EU with safeguards, without stating server locations. European organisations should check which online services they use alongside the installed system.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Zorin OS

Zorin OS is headquartered in IE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Zorin OS scores best on data residency.

Zorin OS is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Zorin OS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
