2FAS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

2FAS is an authenticator and password manager for iOS, Android and browsers. The 2FAS Auth app generates two-factor codes for online accounts and supports backups, token groups and icons, while 2FAS Pass stores passwords with browser autofill and sharing. According to the vendor, tokens and passwords are stored locally on the device, the company does not see user data, no account is required, and cloud or manual backups are optional.

2FAS is operated by Two Factor Authentication Service, Inc., a Delaware corporation whose mailing address is in Henderson, Nevada. The company is therefore seated in the United States and subject to US jurisdiction. The source code of the 2FAS Auth apps is published on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 licence, with graphics excluded and covered by separate terms. The privacy policy includes GDPR provisions for EEA residents. For a European user, local storage and the location of any optional cloud backup are the main factors; the vendor does not state where optional backups are stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with 2FAS

2FAS is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

2FAS hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

2FAS is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs 2FAS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
