AuthPass: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

AuthPass is a free password manager for Android, iOS, macOS, Linux and Windows, with a browser version as well. It is built with the Flutter framework and works with KeePass 2.x databases (KDBX 3 and KDBX 4), which can be unlocked with a master password and/or a key file. Features include search, groups, desktop keyboard shortcuts, fingerprint unlock on mobile and Android autofill. AuthPass has no sync service of its own: users keep the database file themselves and can synchronise it through Google Drive, Dropbox or WebDAV services such as Nextcloud and ownCloud.

The source code is public on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 licence, so the application can be audited and used without a vendor-hosted account. Where the data ends up depends on the storage chosen for the database file: a self-hosted WebDAV server in Europe keeps it under your control, while a US cloud drive brings that provider's jurisdiction into play. The project's website does not state who operates it or where it is based, so European organisations should assess its maintenance themselves.

Why digital sovereignty matters with AuthPass

AuthPass is headquartered in AT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so AuthPass scores best on data residency.

AuthPass is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs AuthPass together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
