LessPass: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

LessPass is a so-called stateless password manager. Instead of storing passwords, it calculates them each time from a website, a login and a single master password, so there is nothing to synchronise. The idea is based on the Master Password app. LessPass offers browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox, a command-line tool (installable via pip) and mobile apps for iOS, Android and F-Droid. The website also has a password generator, but the project recommends the extensions instead.

LessPass is open source under the GPL-3.0; the mobile app is dual-licensed (MPL 2.0 and GPLv3). The hosted LessPass server is now limited to existing users and new registrations are closed. Anyone who wants the server-backed storage feature has to host their own server. Because passwords are calculated rather than stored, using it without a server means no vault holding your data sits with a provider. The project documentation names no company, place of establishment or parent company.

Why digital sovereignty matters with LessPass

LessPass is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so LessPass scores best on data residency.

LessPass is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs LessPass together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
