500px is an online photography community and portfolio platform. Photographers upload and publish images, keep private galleries, present work in a portfolio with a custom domain, and can submit suitable photos for licensing. The service works through the browser. The API has been shut down since 2018. The software is not open source and cannot be self-hosted.
500px was founded in Toronto, Canada, and is based there. In 2018 Visual China Group, headquartered in Beijing, acquired all shares through a Hong Kong subsidiary. The company is therefore subject to Canadian law, with a Chinese owner. Where data is stored and which privacy commitments apply should be checked with the vendor. European users who post personal portraits or professional work should read the privacy policy themselves. For a European organisation it is mainly relevant as a public showcase; confidential image material does not belong there.
