Amazon WorkMail: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Amazon WorkMail is a managed business email and calendar service from Amazon Web Services. Users reach their email, contacts and calendars through Microsoft Outlook, a web browser or the native mail apps on iOS and Android; IMAP clients and Exchange ActiveSync are also supported. The service can be integrated with an existing corporate directory such as Active Directory, and it encrypts customer data with keys in AWS Key Management Service that the customer controls.

Amazon Web Services is part of Amazon, which is headquartered in the United States, so a European organisation has to consider US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. The customer chooses the AWS Region in which data is stored; WorkMail is offered in US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon) and Europe (Ireland). AWS has announced that support ends on 31 March 2027 and that it has accepted no new customers since 30 April 2026. Existing customers can keep using the service until that date and can export their mailboxes. The service is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Amazon WorkMail

Amazon WorkMail is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Amazon WorkMail hosts data in US, EU. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Amazon WorkMail is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Amazon WorkMail together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
