Apache CloudStack is open-source software for deploying and managing large networks of virtual machines as an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud. It provides compute orchestration, Network-as-a-Service, user and account management and resource accounting, controlled through a web interface, command-line tools or a RESTful API. It works with hypervisors such as VMware, KVM, XenServer and XCP-ng and supports bare metal. Service providers use it for public clouds, companies for private or hybrid clouds.
CloudStack is developed under the Apache Software Foundation, a US-based non-profit, and released under the Apache License 2.0. It is not a hosted service: the organisation or provider that deploys it installs and operates it, so the location of data depends entirely on where that deployment runs. A European organisation or cloud provider can therefore run CloudStack in its own data centres, under its own jurisdiction, with inspectable source code.
