Apache SkyWalking is an open-source observability and application performance monitoring platform designed for microservices and cloud-native environments. It collects distributed traces, metrics and logs, builds a service topology, shows profiling data and raises alarms, including for Kubernetes and service meshes. Language agents exist for Java, Go, Python, Node.js and PHP among others, and data can also be supplied through OpenTelemetry. It is an alternative to commercial APM services such as Dynatrace or AppDynamics and is installed by the user, for example with Helm on Kubernetes.
The project is governed by the Apache Software Foundation, a US non-profit organisation, and is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. The foundation does not offer a hosted service: all telemetry is stored in the environment the organisation operates itself, so storage location and access remain entirely with the user. Because no vendor has access to the data, no data processing agreement is needed. A European organisation can run the software on its own servers or with a European hosting provider.
