Argo Workflows: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Argo Workflows is an open-source, container-native workflow engine for orchestrating parallel jobs on Kubernetes. It runs as a Kubernetes CRD, and each workflow step is a container. Teams model workflows as sequences of tasks or as dependency graphs (DAGs) and use them for CI/CD, machine learning and data processing. Features include cron scheduling, retries, conditionals, artifact storage (such as S3, GCS, Git and Azure Blob), a web UI, a REST API and CLI, and SDKs for Java, Go, Python and TypeScript. You install the software yourself on your own Kubernetes cluster.

Argo is a graduated project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation and is licensed under Apache-2.0. The project is maintained in the argoproj GitHub organisation; the Linux Foundation, whose main office is in the United States, holds the trademark. The maintainers do not operate a cloud service for it: data and workflows stay on the infrastructure where you run the engine, for example in a European data centre or your own cluster. The open-source licence limits dependence on a single supplier.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Argo Workflows

Argo Workflows is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Argo Workflows hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Argo Workflows is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Argo Workflows together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
