Imixs-Workflow: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Imixs-Workflow is an open-source workflow engine built on Jakarta EE for human-centric business processes. Processes are modelled in BPMN 2.0 and executed directly from the model. Status, responsibilities, access rights and processing history are derived from that model. Plugins extend the engine, and a REST API allows integration into other applications. A free Open-BPMN extension for VS Code is available for editing models. The engine runs as a microservice in any container environment, and a starter project launches with Git and Docker Compose.

The project began in 2005 and is developed by Imixs Software Solutions GmbH in Munich, Germany, which also offers consulting and professional services. The software is licensed under EPL 2.0, with a secondary option compatible with GPL-2.0+; according to the project there is no enterprise edition and no licence fee for production use. Imixs-Workflow is software you run yourself, so you decide where the data resides. The sources consulted do not describe a hosted service.
