Ofelia (Bonita): sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Bonita is a platform for business process automation and low-code application development, built around BPMN process modelling. A process engine executes the modelled processes, applications are designed with Bonita Studio, and the engine can also be embedded as a component in a custom Java application. Bonita is developed by Bonitasoft, a company that adopted the name Ofelia in 2026 and now offers Bonita BPM alongside a suite for governed AI orchestration. The platform exists in Community and Enterprise editions; the Enterprise edition can run on-premises or as Bonita Cloud.

Bonitasoft is a French company; when Belgian investor Fortino Capital acquired a majority stake in 2022, it was described as Paris-based. Ultimate ownership therefore lies in Belgium, within the EU. The source code of the Bonita Engine is public on GitHub under LGPL-2.1, so self-hosting is possible. The sources consulted do not say where Bonita Cloud is hosted, so the hosting region should be settled contractually.
