n8n is a workflow automation platform for building automations and AI agents. Users combine a visual canvas with JavaScript or Python code steps, connect many applications through integrations and custom API calls, and build multi-agent set-ups, retrieval-augmented generation and connections to systems that speak MCP. It includes human-in-the-loop approvals, inspection of each AI execution, and, in enterprise plans, SSO (SAML), LDAP, role-based access control, audit logs and Git-based version control. n8n can be self-hosted with Docker, on-premises or air-gapped, or used as a hosted n8n Cloud.
n8n is developed by n8n GmbH in Berlin, Germany. Its source code is public under the Sustainable Use License, which limits use to internal business or non-commercial purposes, so it differs from conventional open-source licences; enterprise features fall under a separate licence. According to n8n, n8n Cloud runs on Microsoft Azure and is currently hosted in the European Union, with backups replicated to a separate region in the same country. Self-hosting lets a European organisation keep workflows and data entirely on infrastructure of its own choosing.
