Luigi: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Luigi is a Python package for building complex pipelines of batch jobs. It handles dependency resolution between tasks, workflow management and visualisation of the pipeline, and includes Hadoop support. Developers define tasks and their dependencies in Python code, and Luigi works out which tasks still need to run. The project originated at Spotify, is released under the Apache-2.0 licence and, according to its README, is maintained by Spotify's data team. It runs as a library on your own infrastructure and is installed from PyPI.

The project is backed by Spotify, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, with its registered office in Luxembourg, both in the EU. Because Luigi is an open-source library without a cloud service of its own, tasks and data run only where you install the software; nothing is sent to the developer. For a European organisation this is a self-hosted orchestration option without foreign vendor control. The licence allows adaptation, but operating, scaling and securing the environment remain your own responsibility.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Luigi

Luigi is headquartered in SE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Luigi scores best on data residency.

Luigi is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Luigi together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
