AWS Outposts brings AWS infrastructure and services to an organisation's own site, such as a data centre, office or factory. It is available as a standard 42U rack or as a compact 1U or 2U server. AWS delivers and installs the hardware, monitors the systems as part of the parent AWS Region and performs software upgrades and patches. Workloads that need low latency or local data processing can therefore use the same APIs as in the AWS cloud.
Outposts is a service of Amazon Web Services, part of the US company Amazon, and is therefore subject to US legislation such as the CLOUD Act. According to AWS, data can stay on the Outpost itself, for example in S3 on Outposts, but some metadata, such as metrics and instance IDs, flows back to the AWS Region, and an Outpost is not designed for disconnected operation. Snapshots are stored in the Region by default. The management plane thus stays with AWS. The AWS data processing addendum with standard contractual clauses applies; choose the Region and storage settings deliberately.
