Cloud Hypervisor is an open-source virtual machine monitor written in Rust, designed to run cloud workloads with minimal device emulation. It runs on x86-64 and aarch64 hosts, supports Linux and Windows guests, and can be controlled through an HTTP API that manages the lifecycle of each virtual machine. Kata Containers uses it to run containerised workloads in isolated virtual machines. It is delivered as software that operators install and run on their own hosts.
The project is governed openly as part of the Linux Foundation, through a Series of LF Projects, LLC, and it is supported by several organisations, among them Alibaba, AMD, Arm, Intel, Microsoft, SAP and Tencent Cloud. It is not owned by a single company, so no foreign parent company has to be assessed. The Linux Foundation is a US non-profit, which places the project's governance and legal home in the United States. For a European organisation the source code is open and can be audited and rebuilt locally, so operation does not depend on any vendor's cloud.
