Copernic Desktop Search is search software that indexes files and email on a computer and makes them searchable. According to the vendor, it covers hundreds of file types across desktops, networks, virtual desktops and the cloud. A companion product, Business Server Search, covers company servers. The product is installed on the user's own computers; optional AI features can use an external language model with the user's own API key.
Copernic is a division of N. Harris Computer Corporation in Canada, itself part of Constellation Software (Toronto). Canada is outside the EU. The privacy policy names the company as the data controller for GDPR purposes but gives no specific server locations. Because the product runs locally, the search index in principle stays on your own systems; the policy does say that device information may be uploaded to servers of the company or a service provider. Anyone using the AI features sends document content to the chosen language-model provider, which should be assessed separately.
